I'd like to upgrade from R2 to Essentials, but I know Windows Server in-place upgrades are usually a mess. We don't have a secondary domain controller at the moment to make AD migration easy. First, no I would not expect noticable "performance" gains going from R2 to Essentials.

You might have some additional features available with the new OS, but it won't improve performance on your network. With that said, Essentials is going to essentoals a monkeywrench into this. Some quick searching makes it look possible, but I would triple check to be sure.

This would also mean you need to migrate whatever install Intuit has done, so you windowz need to take that into consideration. The reason for this is if you wibdows have to restore to a snapshot, during an upgrade or something, you do NOT want to do that to a DC. If you can separate those roles, I would highly recommend it. Quickbooks is a dog regardless of platform. Is this going on new hardware? I've done it. Intuit has mediocre support for their products. We see good performance on certain machines on our network, but on the server QB POS moves really slow. I would not upgrade your current and only DC. A few years ago we acquired a small company that used quickbooks and it was a nightmare.
