Although Lincoln Rhyme, formerly head of the Investigation and Resource Division of the New York City Police Department, is now a quadriplegic and can only move his head and done finger, there is no lack of action and tension in this gripping story. When the department asks for his help again with a case, Rhyme reluctantly agrees to help them try to solve it.
He appears to know almost everything about everything, and to be able to decipher clues from the most microscopic evidence. With the help of patrolwoman Amelia Sachs, his personal aide Thom, a crime-scene tech, and the two detectives who lured him into working on the case to begin with, Rhyme unravels all the clues through the most unexpected twists. He must overcome obstacles raised by the political establishment, the FBI, and even his own reluctance, as well as the traps set by the perpetrator to finally solve the case.
I might be that some time spent in law enforcement a long time ago has left me jaded here, but I don't usually have as much difficulty suspending disbelief as I did with this one. The scenarios, explanations, dialogue, characters, and everything else involved in the story are absolutely and ridiculously unbelievable. I mean, they are DUMB!
I can't believe there were so many positive reviews of this drivel. Lincoln Rhyme is supposed to be a curmudgeon, I get it, but he comes across as simply unlikeable just for kicks, I might go back into the text and count how many times he "barks" his responses to people. Couple the distasteful main character with the fact that he annoyingly has a pat and ready answer for absolutely every piece of evidence that is presented to him and the result is a farce.
I finished the book because I wanted to see if it would get better This would have been a one-star review, but I gave it a second star for finally coming to an end. Lincoln Rhyme is a very intriguing character in his own right. Amelia Sachs is a great cop in her own right and it took the meeting of a lifetime with Rhyme to challenge her mindset and infuse confidence in her abilities to round out her ego so she can symbolically and literally drive faster.
I'm looking forward to completing the rest of the series. The rest of the characters on the team are just as memorable because they all have issues of some kind that compliment and each other. Who doesn't love Thom! I totally loved the movie but the book is in my opinion worthy of binge reading the collection.
One person found this helpful. They are immortal now. I freed them. I took them down to the bone. I read this book for the first time when it first came out back in I loved it from the beginning and read the entire Lincoln Rhyme series after that. And as I remember this movie followed the book pretty closely. It seemed like there are a bunch of discrepancies from the book and I re-read it just to refresh my memory. The TV show is okay but it barely follows the book and, in comparison, definitely makes the movie shine.
Lincoln Rhyme was a criminalist with the New York Police Department until he was injured on the job and became a quadriplegic. He's having a difficult time finding the desire to live when abruptly he is called upon to consult on an unusual case. He brings in Officer Amelia Sachs to be "his feet" at the crime scenes. I loved the storyline. I loved the characters especially Lincoln, Amelia, and his health aide Thom. If you haven't read this book and this series, you are genuinely missing out on one of the best police procedurals out there.
The Bone Collector was a fast-paced, can't put down read that kept me reading well into the night!! I can't wait to read the next book! Lincoln Rhyme is a quadriplegic now, since his accident while in the police force. A forensics expert, he is asked to run the crime scene by his former team. Will he be able to get into the mind of the bone collector before he takes his next victim?
To do this, he needs to follow the clues left at the scene of the crime. But will it be in time I loved it!!!! Having read a couple of these Lincoln Rhyme books recently, I bought the first one to see how it all started. It is quite a remarkable book with fully developed believable characters and highly complex forensics work. This book was freaking awesome! As a physically disabled person, it is difficult to find books with a disabled main character that is written in a realistic way, such as thoughts and feelings, and the day to day difficulties along with the successes.
This collection is an invaluable resource for all libraries. They have never seen a murder like it - but something about this killer is all too familiar. A new type of serial killer is stalking the streets of New York - one more devious and disturbing than ever before. A talented tattoo artist is using poison instead of ink. His victim is a young woman. And on her skin he's left a message: 'the second'. A scrap of paper that connects this case with one they will never forget: the killer they called The Bone Collector.

This book was freaking awesome! As a physically disabled person, it is difficult to find books with a disabled main character that is written in a realistic way, such as thoughts and feelings, and the day to day difficulties along with the successes. It is hard to explain. I absolutely loved and appreciated the way Mr. Deaver got it right from the start with his characters.
Deaver gives his main character both and in a huge way! This book was a definite page turner from start to finish, and it was non stop action with nothing but surprises along the way! Highly recommend!!! Well written, with lots of twists and turns. Really enjoyed the characters. Lincoln is a fascinating character. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. He is seriously wondering whether his life is now worth living.
A killer stalks the streets of New York City. He is kidnapping his victims and planning horrific deaths for them. He compounds his intentions by leaving the police clues at each scene of his next intended murder. It is a constant race against time and the police appear to be losing. The authorities turn to Rhyme but is he in a fit state to cope with demands of a serial killer investigation.
In addition to the search for the killer there are several sub-plots continuing throughout the story. The on-going United Nations conference that New York is currently hosting. Deaver writes well in my view and in addition to his description of the physical limitations a quadriplegic such as Rhyme experiences he also shows a good insight into the emotional and mental health aspects of such a condition.
Deaver does not spare his readers the realities of such an existence. Well worth a look. Reviews with images. See all customer images. Top reviews Most recent Top reviews. A good procedural crime thriller with the emphasis on procedural - too many references to somewhat arcane SCO work without enough explanation dilute the tension being built up in the serial killer parts - but it is the first in a series so things may improve The film is a help, though Rhymes is far more likeable through being played by Denzel A good start - I hope!
Even though I'd seen the film which seems to have followed the book very closely, I enjoyed this more than I expected, and, though I thought I'd remembered the ending, I hadn't! In parts there is a little too much forensic detail and technical information but I coped by glancing over it to get back to the story. It's a different take on the usual detective novel and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, who were well drawn. The fact that Rhyme is crippled and can only move his head and one finger, and needs everything doing for him, down to the most basic bodily functions, is dealt with in a matter-of-fact, non-pitying way, and does not become ' the story', a quadriplegic is what he is, not who he is and it is simply part of the tapestry of the story.
His descriptive powers are amazing and the tension is palpable throughout. Deaver crafts intriguing characters trying to stay one step ahead at all times. It continually draws you in. I enjoyed the movie years ago and just happened upon these books - Very glad I did.
One person found this helpful. Great read. Good intro to the series. Starts off with some quite technical terms to get you into the lingo and, to be honest, it just went staight over my head , but once the story beds in it becomes a good read.
The characters are competant, clever and well thought out. The plot is easy to follow but also interesting. The subplots weave well into the main plot. The pacing is strong. I give it 4 stars because i've already read book 2 in the series and that is even better! I watched the film some years ago and it didn't overly excite me in the slightest I found this read one of the best novels I have read in along time I can picture the character Lincoln rhyme as Denzel Washington and Amelia sachs as Angelina AND thank you amazon for emailing me to let me know that there is a Lincoln Rhyme series!!!!!
Strangely this is the last of the Lincloln Rhyme books that I decided to read, strange in that it is infact the first book of the Lincoln Rhyme series.
The reason I had not read it is that it didnt seem as grabbing as the other titles and whilst its good it certainly doesnt rank amongst the Rhyme-Deaver best. The book is identical in plot to the usual Rhyme novel stop the badguy before they kill again, using a team of NYPD cops a disabled genius and a supermodel policewoman sounds ridiculous right.
It is infact a brilliant blend that makes for a great book every time. Rhyme in his first book is contemplating suicide whilst trying to stop a copycat killer obsessed with human bones, the killer leaves clues at the crime scene in order to give the police a chance to save the next victim and on goes the story.
Typical Deaver puts in a twist or two at the end and though this one was a little obvious im not sure if its generally obvious or just because ive read every RHyme-Deaver novel it was still good to get to.
Definitely a book worth adding to your shelf but not quite as good as The Coffin Dancer or a few of his other brilliant novels. Excellent reading keeping you on your toes right through to the surprising ending. I can't say when I last I enjoyed a book as much as this one although very gruesome in parts so not for the fainthearted. Thank you Mr Deaver for a fabulous read, I look forward to reading the next in the series.
