I want to re-purpose a Dell server running Windows Server Standard. It has a non Dell OEM license. The hardware is not changing. Can I reinstall from the DVD and maintain the license? Or are there other steps I need to take first. No it isn't a Dell DVD. The same one I used to initially install the OS. I know there are restrictions on OEM licenses, which is why I am asking this question, but this would be reinstalled on the same system. If this is the same hardware where the OEM license was originally installed on, then yes.
You can use the same media kit and OEM license. Since you are not the server manufacturer your OEM license is not legal to use on it. If you build servers and sell them "with" an OS then you can use a OEM license to install it on that server.
In your case the OEM license ypu purchased for your server is not legal. The OEM would have to come from Dell. Totally wrong and off topic. Just because I use Dell's to build upon does not require me to use a Dell license. These systems do not come with licenses. And to finish this off, yes it worked just fine. From what we see, many sellers do offer OEM licensing separately, under the "condition" it will later be sold bundled with hardware Which is often not verified.
Considering you are a system builder, this is valid, under the assumption you will be selling this bundle. What really matters here are the transferability rights Which OEM does not have, the distinct disadvantage v. Since you are reinstalling the licensing onto the same system hardware defined by motherboard , this is not considered a transfer and the reinstallation is valid.
You are in the clear here OP. The last point, and not sure if you meant this specifically, but you did mention the DVD. The media itself has no bearing on the validity of an install, whether you use a DVD, or download and burn your own ISO, either way works. Hope that helps! Don't care who is selling you OEM licenses. If you think I'm wrong, stop Googling and call Microsoft Licensing. I've been through several of their audits and you wouldn't pass muster with their lawyers. I guess Provantage is selling illegal software then, NOT.
